A Senior Divisional Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, Torgbi Kpambi Vedzesu V, has called on Ghanaians living in Togo to act as responsible ambassadors of their country by upholding values that promote Ghana’s reputation abroad.
The respected traditional leader made the call during the 69th Independence Anniversary celebration organised by the Ghana High Commission in the Togolese capital, Lomé, on March 6, 2026.

Addressing Ghanaian residents and members of the diplomatic community at the colourful event, Torgbi Vedzesu V emphasised that the conduct of citizens outside their homeland significantly influences how the country is perceived internationally.
“Every Ghanaian living outside the country represents Ghana in one way or another. Your actions, behaviour and respect for the laws of your host country contribute to shaping Ghana’s image,” he stated.

The Aflao-Teshie Divisional Chief therefore urged Ghanaians in Togo to remain law-abiding, hardworking and united while maintaining the cultural values that define the Ghanaian identity.
According to him, Ghana’s reputation as a peaceful and democratic nation must be protected and strengthened by citizens both at home and abroad.
“Our country has earned respect across Africa and the world for its democracy, hospitality and peace. Let us not do anything that will tarnish that image,” he cautioned.

The 69th Independence Day celebration brought together officials of the Ghanaian mission, members of the Ghanaian community in Togo, traditional leaders and representatives from the host country.
The event featured cultural performances, patriotic reflections and tributes to the sacrifices of the country’s forebears who fought for Ghana’s independence. Ghana gained independence from Britain on March 6, 1957, under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah, becoming the first sub-Saharan African country to break free from colonial rule.
Speakers at the ceremony highlighted the importance of unity, patriotism and national development as the country marks 69 years of sovereignty.

Participants also used the occasion to reaffirm their commitment to contributing to Ghana’s development while strengthening relations between Ghana and Togo.
The celebration which swirled around the national theme: Building Prosperity, Restoring hope,” ended with renewed calls for Ghanaians in the diaspora to remain proud of their heritage and to continue promoting the country’s positive image wherever they find themselves.
