The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA), Bawku Chapter, has strongly condemned a violent attack on women travellers in Bawku, calling for immediate and decisive intervention from government and security agencies. The association described the incident as a grave threat to public safety and a reflection of worsening insecurity in the area.
The attack, which reportedly occurred on April 20, 2026, along the police station–highway road, resulted in the death of one woman and injuries to three others.
According to the association, the victims were returning from Bolgatanga when they were ambushed by armed individuals.
In a press release issued on the same day, MAYA expressed deep concern over the continued deterioration of security in Bawku and surrounding communities. The group also extended condolences to the bereaved family and sympathized with the injured, while urging swift justice for the victims.
Growing Security Concerns in Bawku
The attacks according to MAYA, highlights the persistent insecurity affecting Bawku, warning that such incidents are becoming increasingly frequent and dangerous. The association described the act as “barbaric and cowardice,” noting that innocent civilians, particularly women, continue to bear the brunt of the violence.

The group stressed that armed individuals are allegedly operating along major routes, including the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulimakom road, creating fear among commuters.
According to the statement, travellers are now exposed to significant risks, with limited assurance of protection.
The situation in Bawku is linked to a long-standing chieftaincy and ethnic conflict between the Kusasi and Mamprusi groups, which has persisted for decades and resulted in repeated outbreaks of violence, casualties, and displacement. This prolonged instability has affected economic activities, disrupted daily life, and undermined public confidence in security interventions.
Reports indicate that businesses, schools, and essential services have all been impacted during periods of escalation. MAYA warned that the latest attack is part of a troubling pattern and signals the need for urgent and sustained security responses.
Calls for Immediate Action
In response to the incident, the association issued a series of demands aimed at restoring security and preventing further attacks. Central to these demands is a call for security agencies to launch immediate investigations and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We call on the security agencies to imme%diately investigate, apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous crime and bring them to justice.”
MAYA also urged government and security agencies to intensify operations along the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulimakom road. The association noted that increased patrols and visible security presence are essential to safeguarding commuters and deterring criminal activity.

Additionally, the group called on the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and other stakeholders to prioritise peacebuilding efforts. It stressed the importance of unity and responsible leadership in addressing the underlying causes of the conflict.
Another concern raised by the association was the alleged existence of specific locations being used as hideouts for criminal activities. MAYA called on the military and other security agencies to take decisive action in such areas to eliminate threats and restore safety.
Demand for Justice and Lasting Peace
Beyond immediate interventions, MAYA emphasised the need for long-term solutions to the insecurity affecting Bawku. The association warned that continued inaction could erode public trust in law enforcement agencies and deepen tensions within the community.
“The people of Mamprugu and all law-abiding residents of Bawku cannot continue to look unconcerned while lives are endangered,” the statement said.
The group stressed that restoring law and order must be treated as a priority, with coordinated efforts from government, security agencies, and community leaders. It also highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict to ensure lasting peace.
Security responses in the area have intensified in recent years, including the deployment of military personnel and stricter enforcement measures, as authorities seek to contain recurring violence and protect civilians.Despite these efforts, challenges remain due to the evolving nature of the conflict, which has reportedly taken on more complex and unpredictable forms.
MAYA concluded its statement with a strong call for urgent action, stressing that the safety of citizens must not be compromised.“Enough is enough. Lives must be protected now,” the association declared.
