Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has commenced high-level rapprochement with his former rivals from the party’s bruising presidential primaries, including Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, in a calculated bid to forge unity and reposition the NPP for the 2028 general elections.
The overture was disclosed by senior aide and Akuapem North MP Sammi Awuku during an interview on Peace FM.
According to him, the outreach constitutes a core plank of a broader strategy to mend fissures and galvanize the party following a fiercely contested internal race.
Dr Bawumia was re-elected on January 31, 2026, to spearhead the NPP’s 2028 campaign, prevailing over Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyepong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Dr Bryan Acheampong.
While the outcome secured broad acceptance among party delegates, the intensity of the primaries stoked concerns over lingering internal rifts and the imperative to rebuild cohesion ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Sammi Awuku revealed that Dr Bawumia has already convened a private meeting with Kennedy Agyapong, characterizing the engagement as constructive and forward-looking.
“He (Dr Bawumia) has made a personal and private visit to his brother Kennedy Agyapong. They had extensive conversations on how the party can unite in the aftermath of the primaries ahead of 2028,” he said.
“He reported to us that he left the meeting very satisfied, with assurances that Kennedy Agyapong will support him.”
Sammi Awuku added that parallel consultations have been undertaken with the other former contenders, all of whom have tendered comparable assurances of support.
He stressed that the initiative is geared toward cementing party solidarity and fortifying the NPP’s prospects in the 2028 elections.
