The construction of Community-based Health Planning and Services compounds nationwide is a decisive stride toward Ghana’s quest for Universal Health Coverage, Dormaa Central Municipal Health Director, Mr. Daniel Konka, has asserted.
Mr. Konka lauded the NDC administration, under President John Dramani Mahama, for its sustained investment in health infrastructure, describing the initiative as a game-changer for grassroots healthcare delivery.
Speaking during a joint inspection of the newly completed CHPS Compound at Besease with the Bono Regional Minister and the Dormaa Central MCE, Mr. Konka underscored the global imperative driving the project.
“One of the World Health Organization’s targets is to achieve Universal Health Coverage by 2030, as outlined in SDG 3.8 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals,” he stated. “The construction of CHPS Compounds will assist the Ghana Health Service in advancing towards this target, as health infrastructure should not hinder access to healthcare services.”
Mr. Konka expressed profound satisfaction with the facility’s design, particularly the inclusion of residential quarters for nurses. He described the provision as a critical morale booster that will incentivize health professionals to deliver optimum care.
He further assured that the Municipality has already mobilized personnel for immediate deployment. “As the Director of Health Services in the Municipality, I have made arrangements for staffing the facility and so, upon handover, nurses will be ready to commence work within the next 24 hours to serve the Besease community and its neighboring areas.”
Seizing the occasion, Mr. Konka appealed to Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Lawyer Joseph Addae Akwaboah, for urgent intervention to replace the dilapidated Dormaa Central Health Directorate building.
“The current building is in a deplorable state, posing challenges during both the rainy and dry seasons due to its dilapidated condition,” he lamented, adding that a new edifice would significantly enhance administrative efficiency and service coordination.
Dormaa Central MCE, Hon. Dominic Adoma Ameyaw, disclosed that the CHPS Compound’s proximity to the Kosane M/A Junior High School necessitated strategic adjustments to preserve a serene healthcare environment.
“The CHPS Compound is situated in close proximity to the Kosane M/A Junior High School building. Therefore, the school building will be relocated to Kosane M/A Primary School to ensure the environment is suitable for healthcare services,” he explained.
He added that the vacated JHS classroom blocks would be refurbished and repurposed. “The Junior High School classroom units will be preserved and refurbished to serve as wards, accommodating patients when inpatient services are required.”
