The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) has called off its industrial action and directed members to resume duties at the Central Laboratory of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, following the appointment of an acting head.
The union’s decision comes after the hospital named its Director of Pharmacy, Dr. Charles Ofei-Palm, as acting head of the laboratory ahead of a pivotal meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 12.
Speaking to Citi News in Accra on Thursday, May 7, the Chairman of the MELPWU Korle Bu chapter, John Kofi Nakoja, said the union is optimistic about achieving a definitive resolution to the ongoing leadership impasse.
“We hope to reach a final resolution on the ongoing leadership dispute,” he stated.
Dr. Charles Nii Kwade Ofei-Palm, who confirmed his appointment as acting head, pledged to serve as a conciliatory figure between the warring factions.
“I will serve as a bridge between the two factions to help resolve the issue permanently,” he said.
The move is expected to restore normalcy to laboratory operations and ease tensions that have disrupted services at one of Ghana’s foremost referral hospitals.
