Prominent Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist, Ibrahim Mahama has urged Ghanaians living abroad and facing economic hardship to consider returning home, insisting that Ghana still offers opportunities for survival, investment and personal growth.
According to him, the perception that life is automatically better overseas has left many Ghanaians stranded in difficult conditions, with some battling unemployment, loneliness and immigration-related challenges in foreign countries.
Ibrahim Mahama was speaking during a visit to his outfit by Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, H E. Benjamin Quashie and xenophobic victim, Emmanuel Asamoah and his family.
According to Ibrahim Mahama, many Ghanaian citizens abroad continue to endure hardship simply to maintain appearances back home, despite struggling to make ends meet.
“Come home if things are not working for you – Ghana is not broke. There are opportunities here if you are prepared to work hard and remain focused,” he stated.
The businessman stressed that although Ghana is confronted with economic challenges, the country still remains a land of opportunity for determined individuals willing to venture into entrepreneurship, agriculture, transport, construction and other productive sectors.
He noted that several successful Ghanaian entrepreneurs started with little capital but managed to build thriving businesses through discipline, persistence and commitment.
Ibrahim Mahama also called on government and private sector players to create a more enabling environment for young people returning from abroad by supporting skills development, job creation and access to capital.
He expressed concern over increasing reports of Ghanaians trapped in harsh living conditions overseas, particularly undocumented migrants who often face exploitation and social exclusion.
According to him, national development requires the contribution of citizens both at home and abroad, adding that returning migrants can bring valuable experience, expertise and innovation to help drive Ghana’s economic transformation.
The philanthropist subsequently donated a cash sum of GH¢ 200, 000 to Asamoah to assist him in setting up a business and reintegrating into society.
Ibrahim Mahama has in recent years become known not only for his business ventures but also for his philanthropic activities and support for youth empowerment initiatives across the country.
