Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has delivered relief items to traders devastated by the fire outbreak at Accra Central Market, as part of government’s immediate intervention to cushion losses and hasten recovery.
The donation, presented on Friday, June 5, following her inspection of the gutted facility, included 30 cartons of cooking oil, 300 mosquito nets, two bales of used clothing, 300 blankets, and 100 mattresses. The items are intended to provide temporary reprieve to affected traders as they rebuild their livelihoods.
Engaging victims at the scene, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang called for an urgent technical evaluation of the building’s structural integrity to avert future disasters.
As part of the relief strategy, the Vice President directed the NADMO committee overseeing the process to prioritise the procurement of locally manufactured goods when sourcing additional relief items, reinforcing government’s commitment to patronising Ghanaian industry.
The inferno, which erupted on the night of Tuesday, June 3, consumed several stalls and left a firefighter injured during efforts to subdue the blaze.
Grateful traders welcomed the gesture, with one victim expressing:
”We thank you for your effort, this will go a long way for us, may God bless and protect you,” one victim expressed.
