Fifteen students from various schools from five regions, have made themselves, their schools and regions proud by qualifying for the grand finale of this year’s Literacy Challenge organized by Channel One and Citi FM.
It follows their booking of tickets from the Knockout Stage held on Saturday, September 5, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.
The qualified regions are: Greater Accra, Northern, Eastern, Bono and Volta. Central, Western, Upper East, Upper West and Ashanti regions, were eliminated after fierce contests.
In rounds of 6, contestants made up of three students from each region, were tested on knowledge, accuracy and speed in Round One (quick fire).
Round Two (between the lines), had contestants assessed on comprehension, language and inference, while Round Three (think), focused attention on numerical, verbal and logical reasoning.
In the Round Four, (evidence table), contestants were quizzed on decision making, experimentation and classification, while Rounds Five (clue by clue) and Six (last word) touched on riddles, and reading, time and numerical reasoning respectively.
Before each contest commenced, a video of contestants introducing themselves were played.
Similar videos were played from Regional Ministers or Ghana Educational Service (GES) Directors, eulogizing and encouraging the contestants to put in their best, and offering them their support.
The important personalities trusting the capabilities of the students, urged them to come home with the ultimate.
Bono Region, was paired with Western Region and after the contest nicknamed Heat One, the former emerged victorious, beating the latter with 51 points, as against 45 points. The total score was 72.
In the second contest also known as Heat Two, Volta Region came against Upper West Region. After the closely fought contest, Volta Region beat their opponents by 48 points with Upper West amassing 45 points.
In the Heat Three, Upper East came face to face with the Greater Accra Region. In the end, the students from the national capital won with a score of 58 points as against 45 points by the Upper East Region.
Heat Four comprised of Central and Eastern Regions. At the end of that contest, Central Region, could not stand the might of Eastern Region, defeating them with 54 points score, against 36 points garnered by the contestants from Central Region.
In the last contest, Ashanti Region came against the Northern Region. In the closely fought race, Northern Region, emerged winners, securing 62 points of the score, while Ashanti secured 58 points.
After a wrap up of all the contests, each contestant was presented with products from sponsors, Advocate Publishers and Deli Group. They also received certificate of participation, and medals. Quiz mistress is cohost of the Citi Breakfast Show (CBS), Francisca Kakra Forson.
The grand finale is expected to be staged on Sunday, September 6, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.
Below are the contestants from the 10 regional teams
The Volta Region will be represented by Mensa Gabriella Mawufemor of Volta Barracks J.H.S, Samuel Danku of Ho Bankoe EP JHS, and Austin Deladem Agortse of Kpetoe EP Junior High School.
The Central Region team comprises Abigail Incoom and Julie-Anne Oforiwaa Danquah, both of Girls Model School, alongside Lawrencia Kwarteng Larbi of Alswel Academy.
Representing the Northern Region are Faheem Wumpini Alhassan of Savannah International Academy, and Abdul-Nasir Shamima Suhuyini and Issah Abah Salsabila of Abe Halperin School Limited.
The Western Region team features Ronalda Nyarko of New Pathways, Joyce Acquah of Onua Francis Ideal School, and Justina Esi Hagan of Bright Kids International School.
For the Upper East Region, Atara Nawal and Davoro Gerald, both of Great Victory Academy, will compete alongside Aloobo Akaare of Adabase Junior High School.
The Bono Region will be represented by Emmanuella Michelle Sieh of Dreamfield International School, Enyimnyam-Boafo Wilson-High Arthur of Sunyani Secondary Model Basic School, and Hilda Opoku Kwarteng of Adventist Preparatory School.
The Eastern Region team comprises Nuako Kwabena Adom Mireku of Suhum Roman Catholic JHS, Nyamedom Appiakubi Appiah-Aboagye of Hallmark Schools, and Stephanie Okyerewa Appawu-Gyamfi of P.C.E Demonstration JHS.
Representing the Upper West Region are Devine Yanbefaare Ambalakuu of Leadership Community School, Gbemmie Abass Sharika of Hilla Liman JHS, and Manuel V.P Eledi of Ancillia Catholic School.
The Ashanti Region team features Laurel Akomaa Obuobi of KNUST Basic School, Akwasi Opoku Gyarteng of KNUST JHS, and Zuberu Latif Babajato of International Community School.
Completing the top 10 is the Greater Accra Region, represented by Neriah Gyamfi of North Ridge Lyceum, Jenelle-Abrielle Ofori of Silicon Valley International School, and Otoo Sarah Augusta Akosua of Achimota Basic School.
