The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed Zakaria Abdulai to step aside to allow for an unhindered investigation into allegations against him by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
The decision, according to a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, follows further consideration of an earlier press release dated October 19, 2026.
The party explained that the directive was taken in the overriding interest of transparency and accountability, stressing that it was not a determination of the merits of the allegations against Mr Abdulai.
The NDC further emphasised that Abdulai remains entitled to the presumption of innocence, while expressing confidence that the CID would conduct a thorough, fair and expeditious investigation.
The statement added that the party would be guided by the outcome of the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Election Committee and the Juaben Constituency Election Committee have been directed to take note of the decision and act accordingly.
The statement was issued under reference number NDC/HQ/25-3/109 and is intended to update party members and the general public on the committee’s latest position regarding the matter.
Abdukai who is the headmaster of the Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) has been accused of sexually assaulting girls of the school. As much as 19 girls have reportedly come out to level allegations of sexual assaults against him.

The issue was initially reported to the Ghana Education Service (GES) but later reports said the embattled headmaster was only asked to move to another school as a form of punishment. The Minister for Education, Haruna Idrissu has referred the matter to the CID for official investigate.
