Disowns Offensive Comments by Party-Linked TikTokers on Helicopter Crash.
The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has denounced insensitive social media remarks made by individuals connected to the party in the aftermath of the recent Z-9 military helicopter crash.
Speaking during a visit to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) headquarters, Mr Kodua described the TikTok comments, attributed to persons believed to be NPP sympathizers, as “unfortunate, condemnable, and contrary to the values of the party.”
“In moments like this, we must demonstrate solidarity,” he stressed, adding that remarks mocking deaths or wishing harm, even on political opponents, were unacceptable and harmful to Ghana’s democracy.
He noted that inflammatory comments had come from both political sides, cautioning that politicizing national tragedies erodes the nation’s democratic culture.
“Some accuse the NPP of orchestrating the incident, while others even say they wished more people had died. Such utterances are dangerous and must be rejected by all well-meaning Ghanaians,” he said.
Mr Kodua further apologized to the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama for any hurt caused by persons linked to the NPP, making it clear that such behavior does not represent the party’s position.
Meanwhile, police have arrested TikTok personalities ‘Fante Comedy’ and ‘Akosua Jollof’ over their controversial livestream discussions of the crash, during which participants mocked the victims and suggested that NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi and President Mahama should have died instead.
The police say threats were also made during the broadcast. According to the Ghana Police Service, ‘Fante Comedy’ and ‘Akosua Jollof’ are being questioned, while other suspected accomplices are on the run.
The arrest of NPP activist Sir Obama Pokuase is reportedly linked to intelligence-led operations targeting groups involved in the illegal possession and display of sophisticated weapons.
