Almost three out of every five public schools in Ghana (58 per cent) do not have access to drinking water supply facilities while 30 per cent do not have toilet facilities. Academic activities came to a halt after fire destroyed the JHS block of Ampayoo-Krofrom D/A School in the Ashanti region. The fire is reported to have gutted the structure around 2am Thursday. The fire ravaged three classrooms, a storeroom, and the headmistress office. Several items including a laptop computer, printer, textbooks and other valuable materials were completely destroyed. The over 150 pupils displaced looked stranded at the time the news team visited the school. The year-on-year inflation rate rises slightly to 9.5 per cent in April from 9.3 per cent in March on account of increases in inflation rate of the non-food group. Mr David Yenukwa Kombat, the Deputy Government Statistician, at a press briefing in Accra, said the monthly change in April was 1.1 per cent, compared to the 1.2 per cent recorded for March. A young man identified as Surakatu Misbawu believed to be in his mid thirties and a nurse at Abrumase Health Centre in the East Gonja Municipality has drowned in the Volta Lake. The incident occurred between Kejewu Bato and Kafaba in the early hours of Monday May 13, 2019 when the victim and five others were traveling in a flying boat from Abrumase to Kafaba. Information gathered indicates that the boat capsized pouring all six onboard into the water. It is still unclear what caused the boat to capsize. Four companies have donated various items including food products, household consumables, and soft drinks through the May 9 Foundation for families of victims of the Accra stadium disaster. The companies, GBfoods, distributors of Gino brand of food products; Interplast Ghana, producers of plastic pipes; the Coca Cola and a Chinese company operating in Ghana, Sunda International, also donated undisclosed sums of money to the Foundation.
