The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) is urging government to install closed-circuit television (CCTV), if possible, in basic schools across the country to tighten their security situation. This has become necessary in the wake of rise in terrorist attacks and kidnapping in the sub-region which put Ghana’s security under threat, the Coalition said in a statement on Monday. “Sadly, there seem to be no practical strategy by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to enhance security in schools, beyond the usual verbal assurances when unfortunate events happen,” the statement signed by the Chairman of GNECC Kofi Asare said. Pointing to…
The monetary policy committee of the Bank of Ghana has maintained the policy rate for the second time at 16%. Governor of the central bank, Dr. Ernest Addison attributed the decision to threats posed by energy related debt and weak inflation outlook triggered by exchange rate volatility. The bank’s key lending rate to commercial banks was first reduced from 17 per cent to 16 per cent on January 28 this year. The rate was maintained on April 1. The governor noted that inflation in advanced economies, including Ghana’s key trading partners, is gradually inching up as a result of rising…

My attention has been drawn to a Ghanaweb publication (General News of Friday, 24 May 2019) under the above caption indicating that “the Head of the Ghana Refugee Board (GRB) has cautioned government to be circumspect in dealing with the recent surge in cross-border movements of Burkinabes into Ghana”. From the onset, the title of the article is a misnomer. As head of the Refugee Board, I will not describe a group of people who have crossed the border to another country as Refugees. If the people have expressed intention to seek asylum in the country, then they qualify as…

A resident of Daboya in the Savanna Region, has sued the Attorney General and Electoral Commission at the Supreme Court over what he described as attempts to suppress Ghanaian voters through the limited voter registration exercise to be conducted by the Commission. The plaintiff, Umar Ayuba argued that conducting the limited voters’ registration at the district offices of the electoral body will disenfranchise a high number of potential voters. According to the plaintiff, the practice of registration at electoral areas is now law per the Public Elections Regulations, 2016 (CI 91). He added that historical records show that this approach…
