In a daring operation at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa Police checkpoint early on Friday morning, the Volta Regional Police Command intercepted a significant cache of war-bond ammunition destined for Benin from a commercial bus.
The Hyundai passenger bus, bearing registration number GR 8246-Q, was en route from Accra to Benin when police officers discovered the illicit cargo concealed beneath the passengers’ luggage. A staggering 60 cartons of AAA cartridges, totaling 15,000 rounds, and 72 cartons of BB cartridges, amounting to 18,000 rounds, were uncovered during a routine inspection.
The driver, Abasou Fousseni, aged 45, and his co-driver, Salisu Jalilu, aged 38, were promptly apprehended for questioning. While Fousseni was subsequently released on police bail to facilitate the continuation of the journey for the passengers, Jalilu remains in police custody as investigations unfold. Although both initially professed ignorance about the hidden arms, police intelligence suggested that Jalilu was complicit in loading the contraband.
Jalilu is now assisting authorities with their inquiries and is set to make a court appearance today, April 22, 2025, as the investigation into this alarming arms smuggling attempt intensifies.
