The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that Ghana will set up a new consulate in Massachusetts, USA, as part of its efforts to increase the country’s global diplomatic presence.
This new consulate will raise the number of Ghana’s missions in the United States to three, joining those in New York and Washington, D.C.
During an orientation for newly appointed envoys in Accra on Monday, September 1, 2025, Mr. Ablakwa shared that Ghana currently has 75 missions around the world, which include 13 high commissions, 48 embassies, and 14 consulates.
He mentioned that President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the ministry to expand its consular network to better assist Ghanaians living abroad and to strengthen international cooperation.
“One of the main results from the President’s visit to Singapore is an agreement to enhance bilateral relations and establish a permanent presence. Next year, we plan to open consulates in Singapore, Dublin in Ireland, and Massachusetts in the USA,” he said.
Mr. Ablakwa noted that this decision is in response to ongoing requests from the Ghanaian community in the United States, who believe that the New York and Washington missions are not enough for the large diaspora.
“Ghanaians in the US have consistently expressed that New York and Washington cannot adequately serve a country with 58 states. Therefore, President Mahama has approved the establishment of a new mission in Massachusetts,” he stated.
The minister highlighted that this expansion will enhance access to consular services, boost trade and investment opportunities, and strengthen cultural and diplomatic ties with partner nations.
