President John Dramani Mahama, has celebrated the qualification of the senior national team, the Black Stars, who have qualified for the 2026 World Cup tournament, to be staged in the United States (US), Mexico and Canada.
The President, who is in China for an official visit, joined many across the world, to hail the team which according to the FIFA World Cup social media handle, became the 21st nation to officially qualify for the biggest soccer tournament.
After snatching the three points from Comoros to seal the qualification on Sunday October 13, at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium, the President sent out a congratulatory message to team from his base in faraway Chine.
In a post on his social media handles, Mahama, who describes the Black Stars as his favourite national team said “Congratulations to the senior national team, the #BlackStars. Another qualification to the World Cup. #ResettingGhana”.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who is with the President on that trip was not left out.
He assured the teaming Ghanaian football lovers that he will ensure the country leverages on the improved cordial relationships it has with the host countries to secure as many as possible visas to go and support the team.
“Congratulations to the Black Stars on Ghana’s emphatic 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification.
Ghanaians can be fully assured that the Foreign Ministry under my leadership shall leverage our improved cordial diplomatic relations with the United States, Canada and Mexico to guarantee appreciable visa quotas for our globally acclaimed football fans. GHANA, here we come! 🇬🇭 🇬🇭 🇬🇭”, Ablakwa said in a post on Monday October 13.
Another appointee of the President and Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor, also joined the fray sending a similar message in a post. He said their determination and teamwork has united the country.
“Congratulations to the Ghana Black Stars on your remarkable qualification for the FIFA World Cup! Your determination, discipline and teamwork has once again united and energized the nation. Onward to victory! #BlackStars #EnergyForVictory”, he said.
The Black Stars sealed their qualification with a competitive 1–0 win over Comoros on Sunday night, in Accra, earning Ghana its fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage since their debut in 2006.
Tottenham Hotspur starboy Mohammed Kudus netted early in the second half to hand Ghana the crucial win, ending Comoros’ recent dominance after two consecutive defeats to the island nation.
