Mahama Terminates Fuel Perks For Appointees

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the President of Ghana, has ordered an immediate halt to the provision of fuel allowances to political appointees nationwide.

According to the government’s insiders, the move is aimed at curbing public expenditure.

This directive, disclosed in an official statement released on July 15, 2025, and endorsed by Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President’s Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, marks a significant shift in governmental policy.

The decision is part of a wider strategy by the administration to rein in spending and redirect resources towards vital sectors and priority development projects. President Mahama stressed the importance of shared sacrifice, asserting that ordinary citizens should not bear the brunt of fiscal constraints alone.

Leading by example, the President underlined the need for officials to relinquish certain privileges for the greater good of the country’s economic prosperity and advancement.

This move to abolish fuel perks for government appointees complements a series of recent austerity measures introduced by the Mahama government. These initiatives include reducing the number of Ministers and trimming the workforce in the Presidential Office to enhance operational efficiency and reduce recurrent costs.

Furthermore, the administration has scrapped non-essential services in state institutions, such as discontinuing satellite television subscriptions for offices in the Presidency and other governmental bodies. These actions are part of a broader effort to clamp down on wasteful expenditure and redirect funds towards critical national priorities.
