The National Democratic Congress has set an ambitious target of achieving an equal share of votes with the New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region in the 2028 general elections.
The party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, announced this goal during a visit to the Atwima Mponua Constituency, expressing confidence that the region’s long-standing voting pattern could shift.
Speaking at Nyinahin as part of his Thank You tour of the Ashanti Region, Asiedu Nketia indicated that the objective of a 50/50 split in votes between the two major political parties was achievable with the right strategy and commitment.
He noted that this would be a key priority for him before stepping away from active party politics. According to him, the target reflects a broader effort by the NDC to expand its electoral base in regions traditionally considered strongholds of its political opponents.
The Ashanti Region has historically been associated with strong support for the NPP, but the NDC leadership believes changing dynamics present new opportunities.
Asiedu Nketia attributed his optimism to what he described as a shift in voter behavior in the region. He said that voters are increasingly focusing on tangible development outcomes rather than longstanding party loyalties.
He explained that issues such as infrastructure, economic opportunities, and improvements in living standards are now playing a greater role in shaping electoral decisions. “People are becoming more conscious of development and how their lives are being improved,” he told supporters, suggesting that this trend could work in the NDC’s favor.
The chairman emphasized that voting patterns are no longer determined solely by party affiliation. Instead, he argued, voters are assessing governments based on their ability to deliver on promises and address the needs of communities.
This shift, he said, creates an opening for the NDC to gain ground in the Ashanti Region by focusing on development oriented policies and projects that resonate with local populations.
To achieve the 50/50 target, Asiedu Nketia outlined a strategy centered on grassroots engagement and development-driven governance. He stressed the importance of building strong connections with communities and ensuring that policies translate into visible improvements in people’s lives.
Key elements of the strategy include the completion of ongoing projects, the initiation of new development initiatives, and collaboration with traditional authorities and local stakeholders. By aligning development priorities with community needs, the NDC aims to strengthen its appeal among voters.
The chairman also highlighted the role of job creation and economic opportunities in attracting support. He noted that providing avenues for employment and improving livelihoods would be critical in convincing voters to consider alternatives to their traditional political preferences.
He further urged party members and government appointees to demonstrate effective leadership by delivering results in their respective areas. According to him, performance at the local level will play a decisive role in shaping perceptions of the party.
As part of his address, Asiedu Nketia called on members of the NDC to remain united and committed to the party’s objectives. He emphasized that achieving the ambitious electoral target would require collective effort and cooperation at all levels of the organization.
He urged supporters to rally behind the party’s agenda and to actively participate in efforts to promote development within their communities. The chairman also encouraged government officials to justify the trust placed in them by working diligently to improve the conditions of the people they serve.
“Unity and hard work will be essential if we are to achieve this goal,” he said, reinforcing the need for discipline and coordination within the party.
