In the wake of consistent fuel prices reduction, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of leading Oil Marketing Company, (OMC) Star Oil, Philip Kwame Tieku, has been thinking of doing even more for their esteem customers.
He is suggesting a conducive business environment where the company can sell fuel lower during off-peak but he is worried this cannot work due National Petroleum Authority (NPA) price floor police which sets a minimum price below which fuel cannot be sold.
Tieku said they are thinking of introducing a nightsales where fuel will be sold at GHs9:50p per litre each night from 10pm to 4am.
This is aimed at supporting the nighttime economy where naturally demand is low compared to during the day. He is however uncertain if the regulator headed by Godwin Edudzi Tamkloe will buy into this idea.
“Imagine StarOil pricing petrol at 9.50 per litre after 10pm each night till 4AM to support night time economy when demand is lower…but that will be low NPA floor price”, he said in a social media post.
But the Authority defends its current position, arguing that is imperative to prevent predatory pricing and also protect smaller Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) from being pushed out of business.
The oil firm was in 2025 adjudged the leading Oil Marketing Company in Ghana according to industry performance data. The indigenous firm founded in 1998, officially overtook long standing market leader and state-owned Ghana Oil (GOIL) PLC in terms of fuel sales volume in the half 2025
The suggestion falls in line with the flagship 24-Hour Economy campaign programme, which government has begun rolling out in some governmental institutions.
The policy is intended to ensure the economy of Ghana does not go to sleep but continue to run throughout 24-hours. It will ensure increase in employment and production.
