The Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) has called off its planned nationwide strike after having positive discussions with the Government of Ghana regarding unpaid debts to waste management companies.
In a statement from the Executive Secretary, Ama Ofori Antwi, the Association announced that the Minister for Local Government and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ibrahim Ahmed, has contacted ESPA’s leaders for urgent talks to address the ongoing payment issues faced by its members.
The statement noted that the Minister promised ESPA that the government is dedicated to processing and paying the debts owed to waste management service providers “as quickly as possible.”
The talks are also expected to create sustainable policies and funding solutions to enhance the waste management sector.
“Given these positive discussions, we encourage all member companies to halt the planned nationwide strike that was set to begin on November 7, 2025,” the statement indicated. “We strongly recommend that members continue their regular operations while leadership collaborates with the government to find a mutually beneficial solution.”
The Association also praised its members for their patience, resilience, and dedication to providing essential sanitation services despite financial difficulties. ESPA highlighted that ongoing discussions with the government would help stabilize the sector, protect jobs, and ensure consistent waste collection and sanitation services throughout the country.
ESPA reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of its members and ensuring that Ghana’s waste management system operates effectively for the benefit of the public.
