The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called for quick and strong action against Ghana National Fire Service officers accused of attacking journalists while on duty. They warned that not acting will worsen the impunity faced by the media.
This demand was made in a statement by GJA President, Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, who condemned the alleged behavior of some Fire Service personnel, labeling it as unacceptable, unprofessional, and a direct attack on press freedom.
The GJA reported that journalists covering an incident with the Ghana National Fire Service faced harassment and obstruction, even after identifying themselves as media professionals doing their constitutional duty.
The Association highlighted that the actions of the involved officers represent an abuse of power and a violation of journalists’ rights.
Mr. Dwumfour pointed out that assaults on journalists by state security and emergency service agencies are especially concerning, as these organizations are meant to protect lives and uphold the law. He remarked that when these bodies become the aggressors, it severely damages public trust and democratic accountability.
The GJA has therefore urged the leadership of the Ghana National Fire Service, the Interior Ministry, and the Ghana Police Service to promptly investigate the incident and ensure that all officers found guilty, regardless of their rank, are arrested and prosecuted.
Reiterating its zero-tolerance policy on attacks against journalists, the Association warned that it would not hesitate to escalate the issue through ongoing advocacy and lawful actions if the incident is not taken seriously.
The GJA concluded by urging all state institutions to honor media freedom and view journalists as partners in national development, rather than adversaries.
