Dr Bryan Acheampong, one of the flagbearer aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has taken a swipe at a fellow contender, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for losing massively in the Savannah Region in the 2024 presidential election.
The former Vice President, who is originally from the North East Region, could not win any of the constituencies in the Savannah Region, a neighbouring constituencies, as NPP’s flagbearer for that election.
The constituencies were all won by President John Mahama, who hails from the region as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate.
The only constituency the NPP won was the Damongo parliamentary seat, occupied by former Minister for Lands and Natural Resource Samuel Abu Jinapor. While the NPP won the parliamentary seat with over 16, 000, Dr Bawumia surprisingly lost with over 4, 000.
While President Mahama won all the seat in his home region of Savannah, Dr Bawumia failed to do the needful at his own backyard of the North East Region.
In the North East Region, President Mahama shared the six constituency three apiece. Speaking to delegates recently, the MP for Abetifi constituency expressed total shock about the turn of event.
“John Mahama is from Savannah Region with 7 constituencies, our candidate is from the North East Region they have 6 constituencies. John Mahama secured three out of the six constituencies in the North East but we could not win a single seat in Savannah. In Damango, Abu Jinapor won but it was Mahama that won [the presidential]. Abu Jinapor won by 16, 222, Bawumia secured 12, 000………a difference of 4, 167.
I told Abu if you are able to convince Damongo delegates to vote for Bawumia, I will support you. Over 14, 000 voters in Damongo voted for Abu Jnapor but when they got to Bawumia’s ballot box they went past it. They did not vote, here 4, 000”, he said.
