The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has led a high-powered delegation including Volta region’s member of the council of state, H.E. Gabriel Kwamiga-Atokple, the member of Parliament for Ketu South, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie among others to the Aflao Traditional Council, as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between government and traditional authorities in the region.
The visit was marked by discussions centred on development priorities, security, and the role of traditional leadership in advancing government policies.
Gunu, addressing chiefs and elders, emphasised the importance of partnership in driving sustainable development. He noted that the government recognises the critical role traditional councils play in maintaining peace and mobilising communities for progress.
“We cannot achieve meaningful development without the active involvement of our chiefs and people on the ground. Your wisdom, influence, and leadership are indispensable,” he said.

The Minister assured the council of government’s commitment to addressing key challenges confronting the area, including infrastructure deficits, youth unemployment, and cross-border security concerns due to Aflao’s strategic position.
He further indicated that the delegation’s visit formed part of a broader regional engagement strategy aimed at fostering unity and ensuring that development initiatives reflect the needs of local communities.

Responding on behalf of the council, the Paramount Chief and President of the Aflao Traditional Council, Torgbiga Amenya Fit V, commended the Minister for the visit and described it as a demonstration of respect and recognition for traditional authority.
The council, however, raised concerns over pressing issues such as poor road networks, sanitation challenges, and the need for improved support for local economic activities. The chiefs urged the government to prioritise Aflao in ongoing and future development projects.
They also pledged their continued support for government initiatives, assuring the Minister of their readiness to collaborate in maintaining peace and stability in the area.

The visit concluded with a renewed commitment from both parties to deepen cooperation for the socio-economic advancement of Aflao and the wider Volta Region.
The delegation further visited the site for the ongoing Blekusu Phase II sea defense project and also visited the Palace of Torgbiga Addo to commiserate with the family on the passing of the Paramount Chief of the Klikor Traditional Area.
