All generation units at the Akosombo Dam have been fully restored to operational status, thereby reinstating the facility’s capacity to function at optimum output and reinforce stability across the national power grid, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced.
The restoration signifies that the dam is now poised to operate at full capacity and deliver adequate electricity to the national grid, following disruptions occasioned by a recent fire incident at the Ghana Grid Company Limited, GRIDCo.
In a Facebook post on Friday, May 1, 2026, Mr. Jinapor heralded the development as the successful culmination of concerted efforts to stabilise the nation’s power infrastructure.
“Mission accomplished. All generation units are now back in service,” he wrote.
The Minister attributed the recovery to the relentless dedication of engineers and emergency response teams who laboured under arduous conditions to avert a prolonged crisis.
“In the face of a major system disruption, and against all odds, our engineers, technicians, and emergency teams worked around the clock to restore power and stabilise the grid. Through their tireless work, discipline, and commitment to country, power has been restored and system stability secured,” he stated.
Mr. Jinapor further extended commendation to pivotal institutions within the power sector for their seamless coordination throughout the restoration process.
“I extend my sincere appreciation to the leadership and staff of GRIDCo, VRA, ECG, and all supporting agencies whose coordination made this possible. This moment shows that even under pressure, Ghana can rely on the strength and skill of its people,” he added.
The swift restoration underscores the resilience of Ghana’s power sector and the technical acumen of its personnel in safeguarding energy security.
