Sammi Awuku, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Akuapem North constituency, has denied reports that he was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Saturday, August 15.
Awuku, a former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), dismissed the reports in a video shared on social media on Sunday, August 16.
He was seen in the video in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, with popular National Democratic Congress (NDC) member Appiah Stadium.
Addressing the reports, Awuku questioned how it was possible for him in the grips of EOCO when on Saturday, he was in the Eastern Region participating in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) regional elections,
“Claims that I was arrested on Saturday are completely false. Yesterday we had our regional elections, and today, Sunday, I am here in Kumasi,” he said.
His denial followed reports that EOCO had arrested and detained him over alleged corruption and financial irregularities linked to his tenure at the NLA. Despite no confirmation from the anti-graft agency, the news of his arrest travelled both far and near.
His reported detention according to rumour mongers, formed part of ongoing investigations linked to the financial transactions and other roles at the Authority.
Monitoring the situation, the unconfirmed reports generated discussions yesterday, Sunday, August 17 among social media users in an era where the one time Youth Organizer and National Organizer of the NPP is said to be under investigations.
