Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of planning to deploy misinformation and disinformation, as key weapons ahead of the 2028 general election.
The Effutu constituency Member of Parliament (MP) issued the warning in the wake of allegations that he attempted to extort money from Ghana Gold Board Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi — claims he has strongly denied.
The accusation, first made by the NDC’s National Communications Officer during a press conference and later repeated on Joy FM’s Newsfile, emerged amid public discussions about losses the Gold Board incurred in 2025 from gold purchases on behalf of the Bank of Ghana (BoG)
Afenyo-Markin has rejected the allegations outright and has filed a GH¢15 million defamation lawsuit against his political opponent.
Warning to NPP and the Public
In a Facebook post, the Minority Leader cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the general public to remain alert to what he described as the NDC’s long-standing strategy of spreading falsehoods.
“Go back and examine the accusations, claims and stories they promoted while in opposition. Several have since been contradicted by the facts, exposed as misleading, or proven entirely false,” he stated.
He urged Ghanaians to stay vigilant and resist being distracted from the real issues affecting them.
“Every Ghanaian must understand this strategy. We must stay vigilant, question what we are told, and refuse to be distracted from the issues that affect us,” he added.
Call to Party Communicators
Afenyo-Markin reminded NPP members, officers, and communicators of their responsibility to counter false narratives while keeping the party’s focus on the government’s performance.
“We must remain alert, disciplined, and focused,” he said, urging party members to shut down any attempt to spread falsehoods and instead concentrate on what he described as the government’s unfulfilled promises and the challenges facing Ghanaians.
Focus on Bawumia and 2028
The Minority Leader concluded by rallying the party behind its 2028 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urging supporters to project his vision with conviction.
“Check the facts, expose the lies quickly, and never allow false propaganda to dictate our agenda. Keep the focus on the government’s broken promises and the everyday problems Ghanaians face.
“Above all, stay on message by promoting Dr. Bawumia’s vision for Ghana with clarity and conviction while working relentlessly towards victory in 2028,” he wrote.
He ended his post with a rallying call to party faithful: “Expose the lies. Focus on the issues. Promote the vision. Win 2028.”
