.At Yohunu Ward Complex Commissioning
President John Dramani Mahama has announced a GH¢500 million investment package aimed at transforming welfare and operational capacity within the Ghana Police Service.
The commitment includes GH¢300 million for new police accommodation and GH¢200 million to complete the expansion of the Ghana Police Hospital.
The President made these announcements during the commissioning of the newly built 85-bed Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra.
Addressing Accommodation and Operational Needs To tackle severe congestion in police barracks, President Mahama revealed he has directed the Minister of Finance to allocate GH¢300 million in the 2027 national budget for the construction of 250 new apartments for officers.

Boosting the Service’s operational capacity, the President announced that a second batch of 40 armoured vehicles will be delivered in the coming weeks, following the delivery of 50 vehicles last December.
Additional body armour is also being prepared to better protect officers in the line of duty.
GH¢200m Hospital Expansion and Ambulance Donation On healthcare, President Mahama stated that the government is seeking GH¢200 million in the 2027 budget to finish the ongoing expansion of the Ghana Police Hospital.
He explained that the previous contractor’s contract was terminated due to prolonged disagreements and cost overruns.
Once completed by the end of 2027, the expansion will add 106 beds—bringing the hospital’s total capacity to over 300.
The project will also deliver a 12-bed intensive care unit, an accident and emergency centre, consulting rooms, operating theatres, and modern diagnostic equipment.

To support emergency transportation, the President donated two ambulances to the hospital.
He, however, stressed the importance of equipping them with proper life-support systems and ensuring regular maintenance.
He also urged hospital management to maintain high standards of hygiene and clinical care, while advocating for police officers to access mental health support without the fear of stigma.
Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex Bolsters Healthcare
The commissioning of the new ward marks a major milestone for the hospital’s infrastructure. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno noted that the 85-bed complex brings the hospital’s total bed capacity to just over 200.
For the first time in the hospital’s 50-year history, the facility features separate male and female paediatric wards.

The complex is fully equipped with surgical and executive wards, diagnostic and patient-monitoring equipment, an in-house laboratory, a pharmacy, administrative offices, an elevator, a 50-vehicle parking space, and a welfare shop.
According to the IGP, these specialized services will significantly reduce the need to transfer patients to other facilities, saving both costs and inconvenience.
While originally built for police personnel and their dependants, the hospital now serves the public, handling emergencies, accident victims, and victims of violent crime.
IGP Yohuno also highlighted recent upgrades at the facility, including a renovated emergency area and mortuary, a new unit for unidentified emergency victims, and the rollout of electronic medical records.
He further announced that a 100-bed Police Hospital in Tamale is fully equipped and set to begin operations, with similar preparations underway in Kumasi.
A Commitment to Police Welfare Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak described the commissioning as a vital investment in the welfare of police personnel and their families.
Acknowledging that the hospital project took over two decades to realize, he said its completion reflects the government’s broader commitment to strengthening public institutions and recognizing the sacrifices of security personnel.

The ceremony was attended by key political and security figures, including President Mahama, Interior Minister Muntaka, IGP Yohuno, former Inspectors-General of Police, former Commissioners of Police, and the local Member of Parliament, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah.
If approved, the 2027 budget allocations will provide the crucial funding needed to realize the President’s vision of improved housing, expanded healthcare, and a better-equipped Police Service.
