Agbodza Announces Resealing of Principal Roads; Oswald Construction to Work at Night
By Gifty Boateng
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced plans to reseal principal roads in Accra ahead of Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary in March 2027.
According to the Minister, the exercise will focus largely on the resealing of key roads to improve their condition, enhance road safety, and give the capital a major infrastructural facelift ahead of the national celebrations.
The announcement comes amid a directive from President John Dramani Mahama to improve the appearance and condition of key roads in the capital ahead of the 70th Independence Day celebrations.
Contract Awarded
The works on the principal roads are to begin in earnest, with the contract awarded to Oswald Construction, which will be working at night.
“The President has directed that we do a facelift of the principal roads in Accra before March next year. That task, once again, fell on the lap of your son, Oswald, who you see that in the night he’ll go and mill the surface and then during the day he will retreat; in the night, he’ll go back,” Mr. Agbodza said.
“He’s got a task of, before March next year, to actually reseal all the roads in the capital city, at least the principal roads. All that will be done. We believe that all these are in line with your vision of development for the Ghana state and beyond.”
Courtesy Call on Ga Mantse
The Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Adaklu, made these remarks during a courtesy call on the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.
He said the Ministry had already begun incremental improvements to Accra’s road network, with a significant portion of government’s urban roads budget allocated to the Greater Accra Region.
Stalled Projects to Be Completed
Mr. Agbodza said the government was also determined to complete several stalled road projects, including the Kasoa and Ofankor roads, following its decision not to suspend ongoing projects when it assumed office.
He also disclosed that work had resumed on the coastal road corridor from Independence Square through Osu to Tema, after financing challenges linked to Ghana’s debt situation previously stalled the project.
Plans for Tema-Osu Dualisation
The Minister said government further plans to dualise the road from Tema through Osu and explore a connection to the old Winneba Road as part of measures to ease congestion along the Kasoa corridor.
The projects, he said, form part of government’s broader efforts to improve Accra’s road network and ensure the capital is ready to host activities marking the country’s 70th Independence anniversary in March 2027.
