The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is preparing to arraign the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, before a weekend court, following his arrest and detention over allegations of financial and economic crimes.
In an update on the case, EOCO has confirmed that the MP, who had previously been treated as a person of interest, has now been elevated to the status of a suspect as investigations into alleged criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related offences intensify.
The Office says it is working closely with the Attorney General’s Department to ensure that the MP is brought before a court within the constitutionally prescribed timeframe governing arrest and detention.
In a statement dated October 2, 2026, EOCO disclosed that the MP, who was arrested on Thursday, October 1, was cooperating with investigators as preparations were underway for his court appearance.
“Suspect Nana Baffour Agyei Awuah is cooperating with the Office to continue with the necessary investigative processes and procedures.
“Mindful of the applicable constitutional timeframes and procedural requirements governing bail, the Office is fervently working with the Office of the Attorney General to bring the suspect before a weekend court,” the statement said.
EOCO also used the statement to dismiss media reports suggesting that the Manhyia South MP had been granted bail in the sum of GH¢50 million, clarifying that no such bail arrangement had been secured.
The latest development follows the MP’s eventual appearance at EOCO’s Accra offices on Thursday, after months of attempts by the anti-graft agency to secure his attendance in connection with investigations into suspected financial crimes.
Although Mr Baffour Awuah reported to the Office voluntarily, his appearance came only after EOCO had secured a warrant for his arrest, following a series of developments that had complicated efforts to bring him before investigators.
For the first time, EOCO’s latest account has provided further details of the prolonged efforts to secure the MP’s cooperation, including repeated invitations that allegedly went unanswered and the controversy surrounding an attempted arrest at the Accra High Court.
“His appearance follows several months of efforts by the Office to secure his attendance before investigators in connection with ongoing investigations into allegations relating to criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering, tax-related offences and other matters under investigation,” EOCO disclosed.
The Office said Mr Baffour Awuah arrived at its premises at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, after which he was subjected to the applicable investigative and operational procedures before being formally placed under arrest.
“In accordance with those procedures, Mr Baffour Awuah was subsequently placed under arrest and is currently cooperating with investigators as the investigative process proceeds,” the statement added.
The MP’s appearance at EOCO comes barely days after a dramatic confrontation between him and officials of the Office at the Accra High Court on September 23, when investigators attempted to take him into custody over the same case.
Mr Baffour Awuah resisted the attempted arrest, describing it as an “unlawful arrest” and an “attempted kidnap”, before subsequently seeking refuge at Parliament.
The incident further heightened tensions between the MP and EOCO, particularly against the backdrop of the agency’s earlier claims that he had repeatedly failed to honour invitations to assist with its investigations.
EOCO had previously disclosed that it invited the MP on two occasions in February 2026 to assist with its inquiries, but that the invitations were not honoured.
Mr Baffour Awuah, however, disputed the agency’s account, insisting that the February correspondence related to his former position as Senior Partner of Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners, and the law firm’s representation of SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited.
The MP, who remains a Senior Partner of the law firm, is being investigated over allegations that have yet to be established in court.
EOCO has maintained that it will pursue the matter professionally and independently, insisting that its investigations will be guided by the law and the constitutional rights of all persons involved.
“The Office will continue to pursue all relevant lines of inquiry, examine the available evidence and afford all persons involved their rights under the Constitution and applicable laws,” it said.
The Office has also appealed to the public to allow the investigative and judicial processes to take their course without speculation or premature conclusions about the culpability of the MP or any other individual implicated in the case.
“EOCO will provide further information when it is appropriate and legally permissible to do so,” the statement added.
The planned arraignment before a weekend court marks a significant new phase in the investigation, as EOCO moves to satisfy the constitutional and procedural requirements governing the detention of suspects while advancing its case against the Manhyia South MP.
The allegations against Mr Baffour Awuah remain under investigation, and his culpability has not been established by a court of competent jurisdiction.
