The Ministry of Finance has sanctioned the release of protracted salary arrears owed to personnel of the Ghana Education Service, clearing the path for thousands of teachers to finally receive wages outstanding since August 2024.
Management of the GES, in a communiqué issued on Monday, April 20, confirmed that the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department has been formally mandated to commence disbursement of the arrears to all eligible staff. The payments cover the extensive period from August 2024 to November 2025.
“The directive follows an official communication referenced BO/CPMU/MoE/2024/FC. Arrears/26/04 from the Ministry of Finance, which outlined the approval framework for settling the accumulated salary obligations,” the statement said.
To balance fiscal prudence with the imperative to indemnify educators, GES indicated that the arrears will be settled in four calibrated instalments. Under the arrangement, beneficiaries will receive four months’ worth of arrears in each tranche.
Payments are scheduled to begin in May, with subsequent disbursements programmed for June, July, and August.
The approval is expected to deliver substantial relief to affected GES staff who have endured prolonged delays in remuneration. It further signals government’s commitment to regularise payroll liabilities in the education sector while maintaining oversight of broader public sector wage obligations.
