Police in Ghana’s Western Region have arrested five suspects in connection with the armed robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer, Seth Kobina, according to regional police authorities.
The attack occurred on August 20 at approximately 8:00 p.m. at a gold purchasing establishment in Agona Fie, near Agona Nkwanta. Unidentified assailants shot Mr. Kobina in the chest; he was pronounced dead on arrival at Agona Nkwanta Hospital.
Initial investigations, aided by closed-circuit television footage, identified the purported ringleader as Emmanuel Amponsah, 29, also known as “Vandam.” He was taken into custody the following day at a guest house in Agona Nkwanta, where officers recovered a locally manufactured pistol and two live BB cartridges. Mr. Amponsah subsequently fell ill while in detention and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital.
Further police operations led to the arrest of three additional suspects within the Agona Nkwanta vicinity: Christopher Seyiri, 47, alias “Cross and Die”; Bashiru Ibrahim, 20; and Thomas Odoom, 30, alias “Wale.” A fourth suspect, Isaac Quayeson, alias “Last Burial,” was apprehended in Denkyira Kwaboso, located in the Western North Region. A search of his residence uncovered a second locally manufactured pistol, three additional live BB cartridges, a metal bar, and two cutlasses.
During interrogations, Mr. Quayeson reportedly identified Mr. Amponsah as the individual who fatally shot the victim. He also named Mr. Odoom as one of the suspects visible in the CCTV footage.
All five suspects are currently assisting authorities with ongoing investigations, and police say efforts remain underway to apprehend any additional accomplices involved in the robbery and homicide.
