Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has demanded a comprehensive investigation into reported xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaian nationals in South Africa, following the emergence of a deeply unsettling viral video.
The diplomatic intervention was triggered by footage circulating on social media that captured a South African woman leading a youth contingent to confront a Ghanaian resident, alleging he had overstayed and insisting that foreigners should return to their countries of origin rather than pursue opportunities abroad.
In the widely disseminated video, the woman vented frustration over intra-continental migration, asserting that Africans should prioritize developing their own countries instead of relocating in search of greener pastures.
Reacting to the incident in a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Ablakwa disclosed that he had engaged his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola, via telephone to address the matter.
“I called him on the trending videos about Ghanaians coming under extremely disturbing xenophobic attacks in South Africa,” the Minister stated.
According to Ablakwa, the South African government has conveyed profound concern over the episodes and pledged decisive action.
“The South African Foreign Minister has expressed his empathy with the victims and promised full-scale investigations into the depressing incidents,” he noted, adding that Pretoria is expected to formally brief African ambassadors on the developments.
He further revealed that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa, spearheaded by High Commissioner Benjamin Quarshie, has been vigorously coordinating a response and extending consular support to affected nationals.
“I am gladdened that so far, colleagues in our diplomatic mission have located the main victim in the viral video and are offering consular assistance. He is doing very well. No Ghanaian life has been lost,” Ablakwa said.
He appealed for calm among Ghanaians while reaffirming the Mahama administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding citizens at home and in the diaspora.
“Let me assure compatriots that the Mahama Administration remains uncompromising about the welfare and safety of Ghanaians, both at home and abroad. We are determined to guarantee the protection of all citizens,” he added.
Notwithstanding the tensions, Ablakwa called for enduring Pan-African unity, cautioning against allowing isolated provocations to fracture continental solidarity.
“May these regrettable incidents never quench our Pan-African love and solidarity for each other. The overwhelming majority of Africans are united and share an unbreakable bond — we shall not be divided by the hatred of a few fringe elements,” he stated.
