Ghana is set to build one of the world’s largest gold refineries, Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi has announced. A strategic thrust to cement the country’s dominance in the global precious metals value chain.
According to him, the facility will command a processing capacity of 600 tonnes, positioning it among the continent’s largest and rendering it globally competitive within the elite tier of gold refining operations.
He further disclosed that sod would be cut for the commencement of the project later this year, with completion expected in 2027.
Addressing the National House of Chiefs during a high-level engagement in the Ashanti Region on Friday, May 29, Mr. Gyamfi stated that the project anchors the government’s broader ambition to transform Ghana into Africa’s preeminent gold refining hub.
“We’re in the process of signing a new agreement that will see to the establishment of what is going to be one of the biggest refineries in the World in Ghana.
“We will cut a sod for the establishment this year, and we hope to complete it by next year. It’s going to be a 600-tonne capacity refinery. It will refine all the gold we produce here ; it can also refine gold from Burkina Faso, Togo, and other places. The idea is to make Ghana a hub for gold refinery,” he announced.
The refinery is expected to capture greater value domestically, reduce capital flight, and deepen Ghana’s leverage over its mineral wealth by refining bullion locally instead of exporting raw ore for processing abroad.
