Tensions are simmering in Mthatha, South Africa, as residents prepare to stage a demonstration on Thursday, April 23, protesting the perceived dominance of foreign nationals in the local job market and demanding that employment opportunities be reserved for citizens.
The protest, slated to commence at 9:00 a.m. and conclude by _11:00 a.m., is expected to be spearheaded by South African nationals aggrieved over what they describe as the usurpation of jobs by foreigners.
Chairman of the Ghanaian Community in Mthatha, Dr. Yirenyi Gyekye Darko, disclosed that he has held consultations with local law enforcement authorities, who have pledged to maintain order and ensure the demonstration remains peaceful.
“I spoke to one of the station commanders, and he confirmed that there will be a peaceful demonstration. The police are taking precautionary measures to ensure everything remains under control,” he said.
Notwithstanding the assurances, Dr. Darko has admonished members of the Ghanaian community to exercise vigilance and adopt precautionary measures to safeguard their lives and livelihoods.
“We have asked our people to stay indoors and not open their shops until about midday, when the situation is expected to normalise,” he stated.
He explained that the agitation is fueled by mounting demands for the South African government to prioritize indigenous employment, amid allegations that foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, Nigerians, and Zimbabweans, have monopolized job opportunities.
“The demonstrators are calling for priority to be given to South Africans. Their main concern is that foreigners have taken their jobs,” he added.
