A leading stalwart of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Novihoho Afaglo, has paid glowing tribute to Ghanaian workers for their immense contribution to national development as the country marks this year’s International Workers’ Day celebration.
In a May Day message issued on Friday, Mr. Afaglo commended workers across all sectors of the economy for their resilience, dedication and sacrifices despite the economic challenges confronting the nation.
He described Ghanaian workers as the “backbone of the country’s socio-economic progress,” stressing that their hard work continues to sustain families, businesses and national institutions.
“Today, we celebrate the industrious Ghanaian worker whose unwavering commitment keeps the wheels of our nation moving.
From teachers, health professionals, farmers and traders to security personnel and civil servants, your efforts remain invaluable to Ghana’s growth,” he stated.
Mr. Afaglo further urged employers and government institutions to prioritize the welfare of workers by ensuring better working conditions, fair remuneration and adequate social protection systems. According to him, workers deserve dignity, respect and improved opportunities to thrive in their respective professions.
He also called for unity among the labour force, emphasizing the need for collective efforts towards rebuilding the economy and creating sustainable jobs for the youth.
“As a nation, we must continue to empower our workforce and invest in policies that promote decent employment, productivity and economic stability,” he added.
Mr. Afaglo reaffirmed his commitment to championing policies that would improve the living standards of ordinary Ghanaians and strengthen the country’s labour sector.
International Workers’ Day, celebrated annually on May 1, is set aside globally to honour the contributions of workers and promote labour rights.
This year’s celebration in Ghana brought together organised labour groups, government officials, political leaders and workers from various sectors to commemorate the occasion, as the nation navigates another phase of development and progress.
