Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in parliament has hit back at critics that there is a video or audio evidence of him conducting himself in a manner that puts him, his family and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into disrepute.
According to the Effutu constituency Member of Parliament (MP), there is no such recording of him and that his hands are clean.
He said the claims being bundled on the internet is false boldly vowing that no such video exist, urging the public the said claim.
“People talking about, they have videos and audio. Some people are playing games on social media. Nobody has any video of me doing anything and I say so on my five points of fellowship. Nobody has any audio of me doing anything to embarrass myself, my family, and the party,” he said.
Since allegations of extortion were leveled against him, there have been claims on social media to the effect that there is a CCTV footage of the minority leader depicting when the extortion occurred.
This is what the Minority Leader has publicly reacted saying this is false stressing that as a leader, he has performed his role as expected of him.
The politician and lawyer came under intense scrutiny and public ridicule after he was accused by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Gold Board, Samuel Adu Gyamfi of extortion.
The explosive accusation of extortion, followed the MP and minority’s claim that the Board made $1.7 billion losses in its purchase of gold on behalf of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) in 2025.
The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) confidently levelled the jaw dropping allegation of extortion on Joy FM’s News File programme on August 22.
“There are many underlying issues between me and Afenyo-Markin that you don’t know”, he said on the programme.
Before that programme, Gyamfi on the Government Accountability Series at the presidency, without fear or favour first levelled the allegation, while reacting to a stern warning that Gyamfi, will be held accountable in a future New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Pushed by host Samson Lardy Anyinini over his extortion claim, the CEO explained that he was not just speaking without standing on a firm ground, indicating that in his political journey he has not used such words against his opponents.
“I am a consummate democrat”, he stated sounding confident of what he has up his sleeves.
The outspoken CEO went further to dare Afenyo-Markin to rebut his claim or engage him in a public discourse.
The MP accepted the challenge but opted to go to the High Court in a GHs15 million defamation suit.
Afenyo-Markin initially said he was leaving the matter to die a natural death, because even Jesus Christ was accused of many things but He never responded.
Lawyers for the CEO have since said their client is yet to receive the writ and have written to the judicial service.
As someone that is occupying a seat occupied by very astute politicians from the NPP side, the Effutu constituency law maker said he has no intention denigrate the seat.
“I have discharged my duty as a Minority Leader with all the dignity that must go with the office. I sit on a seat that JB Danquah, JH Mensah, Busia Dombo, Kyei Mensah Bondu, Paapa Owusu Ankomah sat on. I don’t take NPP for granted. It’s a tradition I respect”.
He explained that since occupying the seat in 2024, he has done nothing untoward except to discharge his work diligently and not act irresponsibly even though he does not claim to be a perfect politician.
From day one, they entrusted me with this position; I have always acknowledged that weight of history to do what is right. I’m not a perfect guy, but I won’t be reckless”
