The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a teacher cum caretaker, seen in viral video engaging in brawl with a female student at the Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School (SHS).
The arrest of Eric Buernortey Apafio, 39, was confirmed by the Police Service and the Ghana Education Service (GES) in separate statements on Tuesday, June 09, 2026.
He was nabbed by the Nyinahin District Police Patrol Team, on Monday, 8 June 2026 at about 7:00pm, following reports of an assault on the 18-year old, Patience Chibu.
In a video that has gone viral, the student, 17-years old final year student, was seen in a brawl with the caretaker of a hostel. The two were seen landing on the ground and exchanging punches. At a point, the teacher cum caretaker ably overpowered the teenager and landed her some slaps on her thighs.
Earlier report had suggested that the confrontation was over unpaid hostel fees.
But official report from the Head/Public Affairs Unit, Ashanti Region, gave a different account saying “Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect, who serves as a caretaker of the school’s hostel, confronted the student and some male students over alleged misconduct at the hostel.
During the confrontation, a misunderstanding ensued, resulting in the suspect as assaulting the student”, the release signed by ASP August Antwi”.
The incident escalated to a point where some of the student pelted Apafio stones leading to the youth of the town invading the hostel to attack the suspect.
The statement said the situation has been brought under control by the patrol team.
A Police Medical Report Form was issued to the student has since visited the hospital for medical examination while the caretaker remains in custody assisting with investigation.
