Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has issued a compelling call to action, urging Ghanaians residing in Spain to capitalize on a landmark immigration amnesty unveiled by the Spanish government, a policy set to confer legal status on an estimated 500,000 undocumented migrants in a sweeping effort to regularise their residency.
Addressing a vibrant assembly of the Ghanaian diaspora during her diplomatic engagement in Spain, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang affirmed government’s resolute commitment to assist eligible nationals in navigating the regularisation process.
“The issues outlined by the Minister for Foreign Affairs are of great importance. We urge all of you, especially those with the proper documentation, to fully take advantage of the opportunities available. Government will also provide further information, including flyers, to guide you through the process,” she stated.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa clarified that qualification hinges on a stringent prerequisite: applicants must present irrefutable proof of a clean criminal record.
To eliminate bureaucratic bottlenecks, he disclosed that strategic arrangements have been instituted with the Ghana Police Service to expedite police clearance for interested persons in Spain.
“All applicants must provide proof of a clean criminal record. To support this, we have put measures in place for the Ghana Police Service to assist interested persons in Spain in obtaining police clearance,” he stated.
Hon.Ablakwa further provided a decisive update on government’s pursuit of justice regarding the death of a Ghanaian student in Latvia under opaque circumstances, underscoring the administration’s uncompromising stance on the protection of its citizens abroad.
“If any Ghanaian is attacked, it is an attack on all of us, and I will not hesitate to intervene. That is why, in the case of the Ghanaian student in Latvia who died under mysterious circumstances, we took a strong position and are pursuing justice. We have engaged high-level Latvian officials and will continue to follow the matter closely. The Mahama administration will not tolerate abuse of Ghanaians abroad,” he added.
