Ghanaian marriage counselor and life coach, Counsellor Kweku Adumatta, has stirred public conversation with a bold claim on this week’s episode of The Real Talk Podcast hosted by Elizabeth Essuman.
According to the counselor, the rising rate of divorce is largely due to the way modern society approaches marriage—not as a sacred covenant, but as a casual contract.
“Divorce has become rampant these days simply because marriages are seen as contracts, which breeds betrayal amongst the different reasons we hear on a daily basis as to why divorce continues to spring at the least pinch,” he said.
In a more controversial statement, Counsellor Adumatta argued that a lasting marriage can only be built if both partners enter it as virgins, tying it to spiritual principles.
“A lot of us from the word, ‘go’, have broken vows because we did not marry virgins. I’m sorry to say this, but it’s a lingering truth that a thriving marriage can only stand if you marry as a virgin — that’s where the covenant comes in, thus, ‘no sex before marriage’ is an order from God,” he added.
He also touched on common issues he encounters in his work with couples, pointing out that assumptions and unresolved misunderstandings often lead to bitterness in marriages.
“A lot of marriages make the mistakes of assumptions which lead to bitterness, and so on,” he said.
The episode, which forms part of the weekly Real Talk Podcast, sparked strong reactions among panelists and listeners, with many expressing diverse views on his perspective.
