The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, continues to show enormous compassion and support to Ghanaian nationals abroad after paying a surprise visit to health professionals working in Bahamas to see how they are coping with work.

The visit took him to the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), where the Ghanaian nurses received him with warmth and took memorial photographs with him.

According to the minister, he was excited to see them in high spirits and being looked after well.

The Minister, who was in The Bahamas, representing President John Dramani Mahama, as the country marks its 53rd independence anniversary, said he took time to visit the Ghanaians to assure them that they have not been abandoned abroad and also listen to their concerns if any.

He said “It is my considered view that we should not only be interested in negotiating labour mobility agreements with other countries but we should regularly check on our compatriots to assure them they have not been abandoned, listen to them directly and confirm that promised conditions of service are being met.”

During the official visit, he also secured a renewal of work permits from the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas for Ghanaians in the construction and engineering sector. The Ghanaian nationals have been working under private business initiatives.

In a post on his socials, the North Tongu Member of Parliament (MP) said the agreement was reached after a successful discussions.

“We have successfully resolved the issue following constructive discussions”, he said adding “I thank the distingue Minister of State for Immigration in The Bahamas, The Honourable Darron S. Pickstock, MP for his remarkable leadership.
