Ghana’s parliamentary Chief Whip has confirmed that lawyers for detained Asante Akyem North MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong lodged a formal bail application before a Dutch court on Tuesday, firing the opening salvo in what promises to be a fierce legal battle over his continued detention in Amsterdam.
The motion, filed as Dutch investigators widen their probe into alleged fraud and money laundering, seeks an emergency hearing within the week. Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, speaking on JoyNews, was blunt about the stakes. “We think he will prevail with the bail application,” he said, signaling confidence that the legislator will soon taste temporary freedom.
Ghana’s diplomatic machinery has been fully deployed. The Foreign Ministry and the country’s mission in The Hague are coordinating consular support and legal assistance. “The Foreign Minister has been able to coordinate the work of our ambassador to The Hague to support and offer him every assistance,” Dafeamekpor disclosed, adding that Parliament has kept an open line with the MP’s family as the drama unfolds.
Frimpong remains in custody, but no court has pronounced guilt. The Chief Whip hammered home the presumption of innocence, cautioning against a trial by public opinion. “It is an allegation, my brother,” he stressed, drawing a sharp line between accusation and conviction.
The case has ignited intense political conversation in his constituency, its cross-border nature amplifying the gravity. Dafeamekpor did not disguise his unease with the length of pre-trial detention, calling for it to be measured strictly against legal norms. He insisted that granting bail would not derail the investigation, with the MP prepared to cooperate fully while free.
The Dutch court is yet to set a hearing date, but behind the scenes, diplomatic pressure and legal maneuvering are accelerating. For now, Frimpong’s fate hangs on a judge’s decision in Amsterdam.
