Free Tuo Zaafi promise earns him roasting
By Stanley Asor
Ghanaian netizens are heaping scorn on the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s Presidential candidate for the 2028 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, over a rather grotesque promise that he will make tuo zaafi, a culinary staple of Northern Ghana, freely available to everyone if he is voted into office as President.
Following the comment, there are some persons who are genuinely expressing fear that Dr. Bawumia has been bewitched to self-sabotage.
The more charitable of those reacting, however, are pointing out that the goofy promise, which is coming against the backdrop that the man has not put forward any noteworthy policies since he was elected flagbearer in November 2023, shows he does not understand the weight of the responsibility he has taken on.
TAYLOR BLASTS BAWUMIA
Among his bashers is US-based Ghanaian journalist and social commentator, Kevin Taylor, who has described Dr. Bawumia as an unserious hen-pecked man without a trace of presidential character.
According to Mr. Taylor, Mahamudu Bawumia is only running for political office because his wife, Samira Bawumia, is refusing to allow him retire, even though Bawumia has long come to the conclusion that he is just not cut for politics.
“Let us put all jokes aside, Mahamudu Bawumia is an unserious character,” Mr. Taylor said in one of his broadcasts on his platform, ‘With All Due Respect.’ “He has long realized that he is not cut for politics, but his wife keeps nudging him to fight for power.”
THE TUA ZAAFI COMMENT
Dr. Bawumia made the comment while addressing mourners at the seven-day Adua of the late Hon. Mohammed Abdul-Samed Gunu in Savelugu over the weekend.
Captured on video, Dr. Bawumia stated in his native language that, “Vote for me in 2028 and I’ll prepare Tuo Zaafi for everyone to eat.”
After the gaffe, his party, the NPP, has been overexplaining that the statement was for light-hearted, humorous effect. However, netizens have not been backing down from an ongoing scorn storm.
SOCIAL MEDIA REACTIONS
Responding on social media, Van Ka wrote, “No matter how tired I may be, seeing Bawumia on TV always gives me strength to pick up my remote and change the channel.”
Yureign Selman SY wrote, “Is Bawumia a product of Temu or Jumia? I am confused,” while Comfort Eshun vowed that even if a guinea fowl was matched against Bawumia in an election, she will vote for the guinea fowl because the NPP flagbearer is just not serious.
