The Ghana Armed Forces has confirmed a brazen and lethal ambush on a military-escorted civilian convoy in Binduri, a tragedy that claimed the lives of three innocent civilians and left another wounded.
In an official communiqué signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin of the Ghana Navy, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the military disclosed that the atrocity unfolded on Monday, April 27, 2026, when a convoy ferrying approximately 140 civilians from Bawku to Bolgatanga came under a ferocious barrage of gunfire from unknown assailants.
According to the statement, the attackers opened fire multiple times on the convoy, leading to the death of three civilians and leaving one person injured.
The Ghana Armed Forces, however, mounted a swift and decisive counteroffensive.
“In the process the military successfully repelled the attack on the convoy, resulting in the death of 7 assailants,” the statement said.
A follow-up sweep by troops yielded a significant cache of weaponry. During the operation, soldiers intercepted an escapee who had sought refuge in a mosque.
“In pursuit, the military discovered and retrieved from an escapee who went to a mosque, a G3 automatic rifle, 2 filled magazines of 20 rounds each and 176 rounds of additional ammunition,” the statement noted.
Ten other suspects have since been arrested and are currently assisting with investigations.
The Ghana Armed Forces admonished the public against interfering with security personnel in the discharge of their duties, emphasizing that civilian cooperation remains indispensable to restoring tranquility in the volatile enclave.
The military also extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The incident underscores the precarious security situation in parts of the Upper East Region, where military escorts have become a grim necessity for civilian movement.
