Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Microfinance and Small Loan Centre (MASLOC) Sedina Tamakloe Attionu has finally been extradited to Ghana from the United States (US).
The pharmacist landed at the Accra International Airport on Tuesday, June 9, a statement released by the Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu has said.
She has been taken into custody by the Ghana Police and the Prisons Service and are making the necessary arrangements for her to commence her 10-years sentence. She was convicted on 70 plus corruption-related charges, including embezzling more than $6M equivalent in Ghanaian taxpayers funds.
This comes after the previous Akufo-Addo government secured conviction and sentence early 2024 after she was trialed in absentia together with one other. She left Ghana while on trial to seek medical attention in the US.
The government put in extradition request to the US authorities in August 2024 for her surrender to Ghana to serve her 10 years sentence. The current government after coming into power also followed up with the request last year.
Over two years of court proceedings, the US authorities notified government of her surrender in January 2026.
The minister who is also the spokesperson to the President indicated that, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice Dominic Ayine is scheduled to meet his American counterparts at the US Department of Justice for bilateral discussion on pending extradition requests between the two countries.
Even though he did not mention in particular the requests the minister is meeting his counterparts on, it is anticipated that the controversial and high profile extradition case involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta is high on the agenda.
The former minister who also left Ghana last year January for the same medical care is wanted back home to account for his stewardship after serving over 7 years as the Finance Minister under former President Akufo-Addo.
