The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has disclosed that approximately 200 transformers have been installed nationwide as part of an ambitious initiative to overhaul and replace 2,500 obsolete units plaguing the power distribution network.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, April 27, the Minister affirmed that the intervention is a strategic move to fortify voltage stability and guarantee a more resilient and dependable electricity supply for Ghanaians.
He emphasized that the newly commissioned transformers boast significantly higher capacity, signaling a deliberate transition from the conventional 20 KVA units to more formidable systems rated at 30 KVA and above, designed to accommodate surging national electricity demand.
“Government is addressing this issue head-on by implementing a nationwide transformer upgrade and replacement programme. As an immediate intervention, this month alone, we have installed almost 200 transformers,” he declared.
He further noted that the deployment of these high-capacity transformers is being strategically prioritized at key primary supply stations to bolster voltage levels in critical load centers.
He cited Adenta, Lashibi, and Teshie-Nungua as beneficiary communities where the upgrades have already been executed, adding that the improvements in these enclaves can be independently verified.
The ongoing exercise is projected to alleviate the strain on overburdened infrastructure and significantly enhance the overall stability and efficiency of power distribution across the country.
