The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has confirmed the successful restoration of two generation units following the severe disruptions triggered by the recent fire outbreak at GRIDCo’s Akosombo Substation.
The incident had sparked widespread concerns over intermittent power supply after flames engulfed the substation’s control room, crippling critical electricity transmission and evacuation capacity.
According to the Minister, the resumption of operations on the two units represents significant progress toward stabilizing power evacuation and fortifying supply to the national grid, while comprehensive repair works on the remaining units continue unabated.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 27, the Minister disclosed that swift emergency technical interventions had facilitated the phased restoration of the compromised units.
“Through emergency technical interventions, the first-generation unit was successfully restored yesterday. This afternoon, I received confirmation that the second unit has also been brought on and is generating power. The third unit is undergoing works and it will also be brought on as soon as possible,” he stated.
He further assured that engineers are working around the clock to reinstate full operational capacity, with additional units slated for reconnection in the coming days to bolster overall system stability.
