Parliament has approved a recommendation for an external auditor to examine the financial records of the Auditor-General’s Office, placing the institution responsible for auditing public accounts under independent scrutiny.

The House approved the report on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at its first sitting after a parliamentary recess.

The recommendation is aimed at enforcing Article 187 of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates Parliament to appoint an independent auditor to audit and report on the accounts of the Office of the Auditor-General.

The provision states: “The accounts of the office of the Auditor-General shall be audited and reported upon by an auditor appointed by Parliament.”

The arrangement will subject the financial records of the country’s principal public accounts watchdog to external examination, ensuring that its own financial activities are not exempt from the accountability standards it is mandated to enforce.

The Office of the Auditor-General is a key institution in Ghana’s public financial management system, responsible for examining government expenditure, identifying financial irregularities and reporting weaknesses in the management of public resources.

The proposed independent audit is expected to strengthen financial oversight within the institution while reinforcing transparency and accountability in its operations.

Although Parliament has approved the committee’s recommendation, no auditor has been identified for the assignment.

The House is expected to initiate the process of selecting an external auditor in line with the constitutional provision.
