In-a-much anticipated show of support, the Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen’s Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set August 14, 2026, for a night vigil in honour of the party’s regional chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi’s conviction.
The event planned to take place at DMB Regional Office in Asokwa on the eve of the party’s crucial Ashanti Regional elections.
According to a press statement issued on July 27, the vigil is designed to show solidarity with Wontumi following his recent conviction and 20-year prison sentence in an illegal mining case—a development the caucus has described as an injustice.
Beyond demonstrating support, the caucus said the gathering will celebrate Wontumi’s “unprecedented and illustrious leadership” during his tenure. The statement emphasized that the vigil is intended to send “a clear signal, locally and internationally, that we will not stay silent.”
The caucus has widely circulated an invitation to constituency executives, party faithful, and well-wishers to attend.
While the event carries a tone of defiance, the organizers have assured the public that the vigil will be conducted peacefully and in a disciplined manner.
The vigil follows a landmark ruling by the Accra High Court, which sentenced the NPP chairman to 20 years’ imprisonment after convicting him in a case involving illegal mining activities by Akonta Mining Company Limited at Samreboi in the Western Region.
