President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate dissolution of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana project, formally ending the board’s oversight of the long-stalled national monument.
The directive was conveyed in a letter dated September 18, 2026, signed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, and addressed to the Chairman and members of the Board.
“His Excellency the President has directed the dissolution of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana Project with immediate effect,” the letter stated.
Trustees Given Deadline to Hand Over
Following the dissolution, the trustees have been instructed to engage the project consultant and formally hand over the National Cathedral site to the Ministry by October 31, 2026.
According to the Ministry, the handover is essential “to allow government to determine the future of the project.”
Copies to Seat of Government
The letter was addressed to the board’s chairman, Apostle Prof Opoku Onyinah, with copies dispatched to the Secretary to the President, the Chief of Staff at the Jubilee House, the Deputy Minister and Chief Director of the Ministry, as well as the Executive Director of the National Cathedral of Ghana Secretariat.
The decision comes few days after President Mahama said that the taxpayer’s money should not be used to fund the controversial and abandoned project.
He advocated that, Christians contribute privately to see to it construction, a decision shared by the Minister. As already known by the public, some $97 million has been spent on the project even though it is at the foundation level.
