Ghana’s plan to establish a new national airline has moved a step closer to implementation following the agreement of a comprehensive roadmap that will guide the creation and operation of the carrier, with global aircraft manufacturer Boeing pledging technical support for the project.

The roadmap, which was agreed following discussions between President John Dramani Mahama and officials of the Boeing Group, outlines key steps required to establish a viable airline, including the search for a strategic airline partner and a technical partner, acquisition of an Air Operator Certificate (AOC), selection of aircraft and decisions on fleet financing.

The development signals renewed efforts by the government to rebuild Ghana’s presence in the aviation industry and establish a national carrier capable of supporting the country’s economic and tourism ambitions.

A statement issued by the Presidency on Friday after the meeting said preliminary studies conducted on the proposed airline had affirmed the viability of the project.

The statement indicated that Boeing officials expressed their readiness to continue providing technical assistance throughout the various stages of the airline’s establishment and eventual operations.

    Boeing support

Boeing’s involvement is expected to provide technical expertise as Ghana works through critical aspects of setting up the airline, including aircraft considerations, operational planning and industry requirements.

The Presidency said the collaboration would help ensure that the proposed carrier is developed on a sustainable model capable of meeting international aviation standards.

The government is expected to undertake further processes, including identifying suitable partners and completing the regulatory requirements necessary for the airline to commence operations.

    Aviation hub ambition

The establishment of a new national airline is closely linked to President Mahama’s broader vision of positioning Accra as the leading aviation hub in West Africa.

According to the Presidency, the new carrier will increase the utilisation of Ghana’s improved airport facilities and strengthen the country’s position as a major gateway for regional and international travel.

The project is also expected to enhance connectivity for travellers and businesses while supporting growth in sectors such as tourism, trade and aviation services.

    Job creation

Beyond improving air connectivity, the proposed airline is expected to create significant employment opportunities within Ghana’s aviation ecosystem.

The Presidency said the carrier would generate jobs for professionals including pilots, cabin crew, aeronautical engineers, aviation management specialists and other personnel required to support airline operations.

It added that the project would contribute to the development of aviation-related skills and expand opportunities for young professionals within the sector.

    Reviving Ghana’s aviation ambitions

The move represents a fresh attempt by Ghana to establish a sustainable national carrier after previous efforts to maintain a state-owned airline faced challenges.

Government officials have consistently argued that a strong national airline would provide strategic benefits for Ghana’s economy by improving international connectivity and supporting the country’s ambition to become a regional aviation centre.

With the roadmap now agreed and technical support from Boeing secured, the next phase will focus on selecting partners, completing regulatory processes and making critical operational decisions needed to bring the airline into service.
